Real is a new perfect!
Turin photo challenge for expats.
- In the 3 provided boxes on a downloadable pdf list 3 people close to you (think spouse, child, parent, grandparent).
- Next, write the first 3 memories that come to mind of time shared with each person (like the summer spent making cookies with grandma in the family cottage). Think about:
- What does it look like day to day together?
- What does it look like to do nothing together?
- What trips, adventures, or life events have you shared?
- Then, jot down the first 2 things that come to mind to describe each person (Grandpa is often found in his workshop, wearing his old, red ball cap, and creating a new piece of furniture). Think about:
- Personality traits or quirks
- Hobbies
- Mannerisms
- This person is often found ___________.
- When finished with all 3 people, circle the memories and characteristics you have photos for. Bonus: Circle the items you have photos for WITH YOU in them too. It’s kind of fun going down memory lane, isn’t it? Add up the number of circled items.

Before we get to the results, let’s talk about this. You’ve just listed 15 things that are pretty darn significant in your life, right? The thing is, we don’t often stop our busy lives and appreciate what today feels like small details about our loved ones.
THE RESULTS
If you have 8 or more circles, you are in great shape! This means you clearly value savoring your memories by preserving them and probably have an awesome box of old photos. Most people have NOT had these results.
If you have 7 or fewer circles, this means MOST of your important memories linger in your mind. This isn’t necessarily bad, but tangible memories are far more powerful.
NOW, YOU ARE HERE IN TURIN FOR JUST A CERTAIN MOMENT. YOUR KIDS LIVE THEIR SLICE OF LIFE IN TURIN, PART OF THEIR PERSONAL HISTORY.
Why are photos important?
Think about your answer for a moment. One day, which will be a more vivid, clear way to revisit these moments in your memory?
Our memories become a little fuzzy with age so tangible memories win every time. The stories you share will become much more visual and true to your words. The stories will live on beyond you.
Your children will have photos to remember their special Turin memories. Photos to remember their experiences with you in abroad, where everything is new including a friends, toys or language.
You may feel all silly about being in photos, but your children will be thankful for this gift, guaranteed.
HOW TO GET MORE MEANING IN A PHOTO ?
Well yes, you can start shooting your stories with your phone. But are you going to hold yourself accountable to get them printed? Will you ever be in the frame? Are you able to create a photo that speaks louder than words and truly takes you back to that day? This is where you should leave it to a pro.
It’s easier than you think! I will work with you to build a session that is deeply meaningful. This takes very little time on your part and the session itself feels worked into your day rather than some big thing you have to plan for – honestly!
No glamorous portrait in the world can compare to a photo of your loved ones that makes you feel more connected to who they really are and all the things that make them special to you. Because when it comes to your next photo session, real is the new perfect.
